SUMMARY:Cork International Film Festival Closing Gala: Is This Thing On?
DESCRIPTION:As their marriage quietly unravels\, Alex (Will Arnett) faces middle age and seeks new purpose in the New York stand-up comedy scene while Tess (Laura Dern) confronts the sacrifices she made for their family – forcing them to navigate co-parenting\, identity\, and whether love can take a new form. Loosely inspired by the true story of comedian John Bishop’s personal journey into comedy\, Bradley Cooper’s beautiful third film as a director is an incisive study of midlife discontent and a modern-day comedy of remarriage. \nHumour and feeling blend in a harmonious\, powerful balance with an exceptional supporting cast\, including Cooper himself\, Andra Day\, Amy Sedaris\, Sean Hayes\, Christine Ebersole\, Ciarán Hinds\, and Scott Icenogle.

SUMMARY:Cork International Film Festival: Blue Moon
DESCRIPTION:March 31\, 1943\, New York City. It is the opening night of Oklahoma!\, a ground-breaking musical play that promises to be a raging success. Legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart (a remarkable Ethan Hawke)\, however\, slipped out of the performance\, settling early at Sardi’s\, the theater district bar that will host the afterparty to get drunk and bitch about his former creative partner and creator of the hit show\, Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott). It is not the first time that Sardi’s barman (Bobby Cannavale)\, sees Lorenz order drink after drink while promising that the next one is the last… Margaret Qualley completes the all-star cast as an ingenue quite aware of her beauty’s advantages. \nA moving study of the frailty of the artist\, Richard Linklater’s multifasceted biopic of these real-life Broadway figures is\, as always\, a beautiful display of meticulous craftmanship. Razor-sharp dialogues that are gift to his wonderful actors\, authorial gestures that elevates a chamber piece to an incredibly poetic and engaging drama… Linklater’s joy at exploring his art’s possibilities is exhilarating.

SUMMARY:Cork International Film Festival Opening Gala: Saipan
DESCRIPTION:2002\, shortly before the FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea. The Irish national football team arrives on the Pacific island of Saipan where they are to bond and train before moving to Japan. But the management’s relaxed approach does not match team captain Roy Keane’s expectations. The Man United star player is here to win it. \nFilmmakers Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn handle the story with all the respect due to one of the most seismic events in Irish sporting history. A respect for facts\, for protagonists\, for all the people of Ireland\, really\, who found themselves having to take sides. Indeed\, the public quarrel between Keane and manager Mick McCarthy rocked the nation and sparked debates on notions that went far beyond sport: loyalty\, ethics\, identity. Saipan was\, and is\, a big deal. \nTHE 70TH CORK INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL OPENING GALA \nMarking the Festival’s milestone 70th anniversary\, the Opening Night Gala promises to be a spectacular event with special guests and awards\, as well as the much-anticipated film premiere. Oscar®-winning producer\, film educator and CIFF Patron David Puttnam will be presented with an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award by the multi-award-winning Irish actor Gabriel Byrne. \nThe Opening Night celebration will also include the unveiling of a recently rediscovered short archival film about the Festival\, digitised and restored by the Irish Film Institute\, offering a nostalgic treat for the audience.

SUMMARY:Mapping Climate Change: The Knitting Map & The Tempestry Project
DESCRIPTION:Come along to see The Knitting Map from Cork 2005 (on its 20th birthday!) as well as the US Tempestries in the beautiful renovated warehouse in Horgan’s Quay. The Mapping Climate Change exhibition unites for the first time two innovative textile art projects that give visual and tangible presence to our warming world at a crucial moment of environmental precarity. \nThis exhibition especially celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Knitting Map\, which was commissioned in 2005 as one of the flagship projects of Cork’s year as European \nCapital of Culture. Ambitious and visionary\, this large-scale textile installation was made collaboratively with more than 2000 older\, working-class women from Cork’s North side and knitted every day for a year. Weather station data was programmed to generate yarn colour and movement to generate complexity of stitch. The work is an abstract cartography of weather data and urban movement in Cork City over a calendar year. \nFor more information contact: Jools Gilson / jgilson@ucc.ie

SUMMARY:Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Slovak Animation at Culture Night 2025
DESCRIPTION:Cork International Film Festival celebrates Culture Night 2025 with 2 programmes of Animated Slovak Short Films. \nCurated by the Slovak Film Institute\, the Slovak Animated Shorts programme features twelve remarkable Slovak animated films. Programme 1 is intended for young viewers\, while Programme 2 is aimed at adults. Together\, they showcase a rich variety of storytelling and animation styles – from hand-drawn and puppet animation to stop-motion and digital techniques. These films explore a wide range of themes\, including instructional\, educational\, advertising\, and environmental subjects. \nThe legacy of Slovak animation pioneer Viktor Kubal\, often regarded as the father of Slovak animation\, resonates throughout the collection. His films are presented alongside that of other prolific animators such as Vladimír Pikalík and Jaroslava Havettová. \nSpanning from 1955 to 1990\, the selection offers a window into the rich history of Slovak animation. Sometimes surreal\, at other times thought-provoking or purely entertaining – but always captivating – these shorts will surely engage and delight audiences of all ages. \n
