SUMMARY:Mapping Climate Change: The Knitting Map & The Tempestry Project
DESCRIPTION:Come along to see The Knitting Map from Cork 2005 (on its 20th birthday!) as well as the US Tempestries in the beautiful renovated warehouse in Horgan’s Quay. The Mapping Climate Change exhibition unites for the first time two innovative textile art projects that give visual and tangible presence to our warming world at a crucial moment of environmental precarity. \nThis exhibition especially celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Knitting Map\, which was commissioned in 2005 as one of the flagship projects of Cork’s year as European \nCapital of Culture. Ambitious and visionary\, this large-scale textile installation was made collaboratively with more than 2000 older\, working-class women from Cork’s North side and knitted every day for a year. Weather station data was programmed to generate yarn colour and movement to generate complexity of stitch. The work is an abstract cartography of weather data and urban movement in Cork City over a calendar year. \nFor more information contact: Jools Gilson / jgilson@ucc.ie

SUMMARY:Cork City as an Urban Garden
DESCRIPTION:“Urban greening isn’t just about making things look pretty. It’s about health\, sustainability\, biodiversity\, and better living for everyone.” Peter Dowdall (The Irish Gardener) \nWhat could the VQ look like if we worked together to develop a greening and biodiversity plan for the neighbourhood? What potential wins would you highlight for the area? \nJoin the VQ as we welcome guest speaker Peter Dowdall (The Irish Gardener) to share his thoughts on the opportunity that exists for communities to come together in Cork and actively promote and implement urban greening intiatives. Peter is a garden designer\, horticulturist\, and media contributor\, passionate about helping people connect with plants\, nature\, and better design. \nThe event is open to members and non-members who would like to learn more about this topic.
